Stewarding our Character

Often, we hear instances where tall leaders whom we respect fall short in their personal lives. People may fall in the area of financial integrity, relationships with the opposite sex, or even into power tussles and positions. Stewarding our character in this context assumes great significance.

In Paul’s instruction to Timothy on the qualification of overseers, he mentions many qualities, including self-control, being faithful to his wife, and not a lover of money (1 Tim 3:1-7). He also emphasises that the overseers must be people of reputation. Whichever level of leadership role we are in, we need to be aware that we are susceptible to falling and be careful to guard our character.

Based on the life of King David, CA Manju George portrays a four-fold model of stewarding our character. Calling & Capacity (He recognised God’s appointment and shaping for leadership), Conviction & Conscience (Leading from inner integrity and led by the Holy Spirit), Correction & Counsel (Embracing accountability, truth-telling, and restoration), Continuity & Commission (Finishing well by preparing others and passing on the mission). Because he followed these principles, even though there was a fall, he was certified as a ‘man after God’s own heart’ (Acts 13:12).

CIM emphasises the character-building of the people for sustainable institutional leadership. May God bless us to steward our character so that we can continue to build our lives with Godly values and thrive in our areas of responsibility.
